Professional Background
Dr. Sanjana Karim is a dual board-certified physician in San Francisco. She specializes in providing psychotherapy, complemented with medication treatment when needed.
Dr. Karim obtained her bachelor's degree following a liberal arts education at Davidson College, with a major in biology and concentration in ethnic studies. She went on to obtain her medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine, where she received the Francis Clark Award in Psychiatry. She completed her residency in psychiatry and a resident fellowship in health policy at the George Washington University Hospital. She had a large emphasis on therapy training, with focus on psychodynamic psychotherapy as well as cognitive behavioral therapy. She is also trained and experienced in mindfulness-based therapies, EMDR, and Islamically integrated psychotherapy.
Dr. Karim has been in practice for over 15 years, and is board-certified in Adult Psychiatry as well as Addiction Medicine. She has worked in outpatient and inpatient treatment facilities, as well as in the nonprofit sector. She has worked as a section chief caring for Veterans, as well as a medical director for a substance abuse program, and most recently for a group private practice. She has published and taught students and residents extensively on the following areas of interest: telepsychiatry, treatment of depression, anxiety and psychological trauma in the primary care setting, taking a holistic and integrative approach to symptoms of psychological distress, depression, anxiety, and the neurological basis of addiction and addictive behaviors.
Dr. Karim provides compassionate, non-judgmental, evidence-based care to people struggling with feeling “stuck” or out of place in their lives. She specializes in helping people who want to improve their emotional intelligence and cognitive flexibility. These are keys to success in any area of life. She works collaboratively alongside patients, and is dedicated to helping them achieve a sense of improved self-awareness, well-being and empowerment.
